RHODE ISLAND DISTRICT COURTS

The Rhode Island jurisdictions are divided between four counties. Each county has its own District Court, and each District Court hears matters within its own jurisdiction. Attorney Boisclair has experience in each of the counties and with her local knowledge, assists those facing criminal or motor vehicle offenses locate the correct court, verify where the individual must appear, and thereafter develop a legal defense.

What are the four counties?

Rhode Island contains four counties: Washington County (also known as “South County” to locals), Kent County, Newport County, and Providence County. 

Washington County District Court hears matters for the following jurisdictions: Charlestown, DEM, Hopkinton, Narragansett, New Shoreham, South Kingstown, Richmond, and Westerly.

Kent County District Court hears matters for the following jurisdictions: Coventry, Cranston, East Greenwich, Foster, Glocester, Johnston, Lincoln, North Kingstown, North Providence, North Smithfield, Scituate, Smithfield, Warwick, West Greenwich, West Warwick and TF Green/Airport.

Newport County District Court hears matters for the following jurisdictions: Jamestown, Little Compton, Middletown, Newport, Portsmouth, and Tiverton.

Providence County District Court hears matters for the following jurisdictions: Barrington, Bristol, Burrillville, Central Falls, Cumberland, East Providence, Pawtucket, Providence, Warren, and Woonsocket.

RHODE ISLAND SUPERIOR COURTS

In Rhode Island, the District Court lacks jurisdiction to handle felony and capitol offense cases. For these types of charges, an individual’s matter must be brought before the Superior Court. Much like the District Courts, the Superior Courts are separated into four counties and each county handles matters within its jurisdiction.
